Our work focuses on the intersection between art, environmental research and community engagement, using artistic practices as tools to foster water literacy, ecological awareness and collective stewardship of river ecosystems.
Through the Museo dell’Aquila Reale and the Associazione Collettivo L’Aquila Reale ETS, we develop artistic residencies, exhibitions, participatory workshops and field-based learning activities that connect artists, researchers, local institutions and citizens. Our programmes explore the Aniene River basin as a living cultural and ecological landscape, promoting dialogue between art, science, local knowledge and environmental monitoring.
Our organisation is also an active member of the Contratto di Fiume dell’Aniene, a multi-stakeholder governance platform dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of the river basin. Within this framework, we are responsible for the implementation of two transversal actions focused on cultural engagement, environmental awareness and community participation, strengthening the role of culture and the arts in river stewardship.
A key component of our work is the development of participatory and transdisciplinary projects that bring together artists, scientists, students and local communities to investigate water systems through creative and research-based approaches. These initiatives include citizen science activities, river monitoring, educational programmes with local schools, and artistic research residencies focused on environmental processes, landscape transformation and water governance.
By combining artistic experimentation with scientific observation and community participation, our projects aim to strengthen public understanding of freshwater ecosystems, encourage sustainable practices and contribute to the protection and restoration of river environments, particularly in rural and mountain territories such as the Aniene Valley in the Lazio region of Italy.
