LIPSea-M is a project of the Laboratory of Potential Images (LIP) at Pompeu Fabra University, a space for interdisciplinary creation and research between microbiology and filmmaking. The project is developed in collaboration with the CINEMA research group (UPF) and the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE, CSIC-UPF).
Starting from research on visual motifs of the climate emergency, we develop an experimental art-science methodology that allows us to visualize potential images of the impact of the ecological crisis in the Mediterranean; images that can only be accessed through microscopic and scientific instruments, and which are too abstract and complex to be communicated to the public without mediation.
With LIPSea-M, we work alongside the Microbial Ecology and Evolution Lab (IBE) to study how the tropicalization of the Catalan Mediterranean affects coral holobionts. We seek, record, and archive these images to develop an expanded film project intertwined with citizen participation and knowledge transfer actions, aiming to raise awareness about the effects of climate change on our sea.
